Can I get Strep Throat in the summer?
It’s easy to assume that Strep Throat is something you’re only likely to suffer with during the winter months. However, the reality is that this can affect you all year round. Strep Throat is caused by a bacteria and that bacteria can potentially reach us in June as much as it can in November. So, if you feel like you’re getting the symptoms of Strep Throat this summer don’t dismiss it - you could well be right.
What is Strep Throat?
It’s a bacteria that tends to trigger a huge reaction in our immune system when it enters the body. You’re most likely to notice this on your skin and in your throat. The throat is the most common place where this bacteria has an effect, hence the term Strep Throat. Although this isn’t a dangerous infection to have, it can be very painful and treating it means being aware that it could be affecting you or your children.
How do you get Strep Throat?
Strep Throat is caused by the spread of the Strep bacteria so this can happen anywhere that you’re in contact with other people. Strep loves a crowd, especially a closely packed one, as this provides plenty of opportunity to reach new human targets. The bacteria is spread via respiratory droplets that are released by someone who already has the infection (e.g. by coughing). If you breathe these in or touch something that has these droplets on - and then touch your nose or mouth - then you’re likely to end up with Strep Throat. In many ways, although we tend to associate Strep Throat with the winter, summer is the perfect time for it. From playdates to parties there are plenty of opportunities for the bacteria to spread.
Who is most likely to get Strep Throat in summer?
It’s a bacteria that doesn’t discriminate so you could pick this up at work and pass it on to someone at a BBQ or your children might bring it back from playing in the park and give it to you or your older relatives.
What about the impact on skin?
A bug bite or cut can provide a way for Strep to get into the skin and cause a bacterial infection of the skin. This tends to make your skin hot and red and you’ll notice there might also be pus.
What do you need to do if you get Strep Throat?
For most people, Strep isn’t life-threatening but it’s uncomfortable and you should do your best not to pass it on to others. A course of treatment can help to shorten the amount of time you’re suffering and also minimise the potential for you to give the Strep to someone else. In older people there can be the risk of complications - such as Sepsis - so it’s especially important to get some medical help if you’re older.
It’s perfectly possible for anyone to suffer with Strep Throat in summer as well as winter. It’s important to be aware of the potential symptoms at any time of year.
